PATHANAMTHITTA: A controversy has erupted within Kerala’s police force after DySP Madhu Babu raised serious objections to the appointment of a controversial lawyer as special prosecutor in a 2013 murder case. The complaint, addressed to the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief, targets Pathanamthitta SP VG Vinod Kumar’s decision to appoint advocate Prashanth V Kurup for the high-profile case.
Madhu Babu, formerly the Circle Inspector in Pathanamthitta and now posted as DySP in Alappuzha, has alleged that Prashanth’s inclusion is part of a deliberate attempt to weaken the case. According to the complaint, Prashanth is listed in the “rowdy list” maintained by the Pathanamthitta police and faces criminal charges in three different districts.
The case in question revolves around a murder that occurred inside a city shop in 2013, during Madhu Babu’s tenure as the investigating officer. He claims that Prashanth’s past record, coupled with his inexperience in handling serious criminal trials, makes him an unfit choice for the role. “He’s only dealt with traffic accident cases,” the complaint states, warning that such an appointment may sabotage years of investigation.
In response, Advocate Prashanth dismissed the allegations, attributing the cases against him to personal vendetta by Madhu Babu during his earlier posting. “The accusations are baseless. I handle criminal cases as well and am fully qualified for the role,” he asserted.
The issue has sparked intense debate within legal and law enforcement circles as questions loom over transparency and motive.
