Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the season’s first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea has intensified into Cyclone ‘Shakti’, a name given by Sri Lanka. Currently positioned about 300 km west of Dwarka and 360 km west of Porbandar, the storm is expected to strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm over the next two days. While the cyclone is likely to remain offshore, its impact may be felt across coastal and interior regions of Maharashtra.

Areas under warning and wind conditions

The IMD has issued alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, with wind speeds expected to range from 45–55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h, along the North Maharashtra coast between October 3 and 5. Sea conditions remain very rough, with turbulent waters along the northern Maharashtra coast.

Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve. Residents in coastal areas are also urged to stay alert for weather updates and avoid unnecessary outdoor travel during high winds and heavy rainfall.

Rainfall and flooding risks

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast across interior regions of Maharashtra, particularly in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada. The IMD has highlighted the risk of flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan, caused by intense cloud formation and high atmospheric moisture.

Local authorities have been asked to monitor water levels in rivers and drains and to keep evacuation plans ready for vulnerable communities. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to move to higher ground if necessary and remain cautious during periods of continuous rain.

Government preparedness and measures

In response to Cyclone Shakti, the Maharashtra government has directed district administrations to:

  • Activate disaster management systems
  • Prepare and update evacuation plans for residents in low-lying and coastal areas
  • Issue public advisories and alerts
  • Discourage sea travel and restrict fishing activities
  • Ensure safety during heavy rainfall, including monitoring vulnerable infrastructure

Authorities are coordinating with municipal corporations to clear drains, inspect embankments, and maintain emergency response teams ready for rapid deployment.

Impact on daily life in Mumbai and nearby cities

Mumbai and neighbouring cities may experience intense rainfall, which could disrupt local transport, trains, and road traffic. Waterlogging is possible in low-lying areas, affecting residential and commercial areas.

Residents are advised to:

  • Plan travel carefully and check transport services
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during heavy rains
  • Follow municipal warnings regarding flooding or road closures
  • Stay updated on weather alerts from the IMD and local authorities

While the cyclone is expected to remain offshore, precautionary measures are essential to minimise the impact on life and property.

Authorities emphasise that residents should remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and prioritise safety over routine activities during the cyclone’s peak impact period.
