In a heartbreaking tragedy in Delhi’s Palam area, a 22-year-old woman chose to stay with her elderly mother in a burning building, sacrificing her life in an act of love that has moved the nation.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a four-storey residential building caught fire, claiming the lives of nine members of the same family.
A daughter’s final decision
Himanshi, 22, stayed back with her 70-year-old mother, Lado Kashyap, who was unable to escape as flames spread rapidly through the building. While other family members tried to reach the upper floors, Himanshi refused to leave her mother behind.
According to relatives, she remained by her side and even attempted to drag her to safety. As the fire intensified, the two took shelter in a bathroom, but were soon engulfed by flames fuelled by combustible materials.
Rescuers later found their bodies lying next to each other.
Fire spreads rapidly, trapping family
The blaze reportedly spread quickly through the narrow residential building, leaving little time for escape. Several family members had moved to the upper floors and were calling for help, but thick smoke and intense heat made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
The deceased include multiple members of the same family, including children, making the incident even more devastating.
Rescue challenges and delays questioned
Eyewitnesses have raised concerns over delays in rescue operations. The hydraulic ladder from the first fire engine reportedly failed to deploy properly, while another rescue vehicle took significant time to arrive.
By the time additional help reached the spot, visibility had reduced due to dense smoke, and several victims could no longer be reached.
Survivors and ongoing treatment
Two family members who jumped from the building to escape the fire are currently undergoing treatment in hospital.
Authorities have begun investigating the incident, including possible lapses in emergency response and equipment readiness.
A tragedy that has shaken many
The incident has sparked grief and outrage, with questions being raised about fire safety preparedness in densely populated residential areas.
Himanshi’s final act—choosing to stay with her mother in her last moments—has emerged as a powerful and emotional reminder of love, sacrifice, and human connection in the face of tragedy.
