Deeply distressed : S Jaishankar condoles loss of lives in Hathras stampede

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his deep condolences following the tragic stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, which resulted in numerous casualties. He extended his sympathies to the families affected and wished for the swift recovery of those injured.

“Deeply distressed by the tragic loss of lives in a stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Jaishankar posted on X.

The stampede, which took place during a religious event on Tuesday, claimed 116 lives and left 18 people injured, according to officials.

In response, police conducted a search at the Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district for ‘Bhole Baba’, who organized the Satsang where the stampede occurred. Deputy SP Sunil Kumar stated, “We did not find Baba ji inside the campus…He is not here…”

Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V confirmed the casualty figures, stating, “116 people have been confirmed dead. 18 people are injured. Treatment is being ensured for the injured in Aligarh district. Primary investigation is being carried out.”

Aligarh Inspector General Shalabh Mathur mentioned that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations and that an FIR will be filed against several individuals, including the event organizers, due to the overcrowding.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and wished for the quick recovery of the injured. He communicated with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure all possible assistance is being provided to the victims.

“The Uttar Pradesh government is engaged in providing all possible help to the victims. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” PM Modi shared on X.
