Two Delhi Police officials appeared before a city court on Tuesday after being summoned as accused in connection with the 2020 death of 23-year-old Faizan during the North-East Delhi riots.

The case relates to a viral video in which Faizan was allegedly seen being beaten by police personnel along with four other men and forced to sing the national anthem.

Court takes cognisance of chargesheet

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mayank Goel of Rouse Avenue Courts directed that copies of the chargesheet and relevant documents be supplied to both accused and the victim’s counsel. The matter has been listed for March 2 for scrutiny of documents.

Head Constable Ravinder Kumar and Constable Pawan Yadav were summoned earlier this month after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its chargesheet. The investigation was transferred to the CBI in 2024 by the Delhi High Court following a plea by Faizan’s mother, Kismatun, seeking an independent probe.

In its February 4 order, the court observed that there was sufficient material to take cognisance under Sections 323, 325 and 304(II) read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Allegations of assault and denial of care

Faizan’s mother alleged that her son was illegally detained and denied timely medical treatment, resulting in his death on February 26, 2020. He reportedly died at GTB Hospital within 24 hours of being released from Jyoti Nagar police station.

While transferring the probe, the Delhi High Court had criticised the initial investigation, stating it appeared to be “conveniently sparing” of those suspected of assaulting Faizan.

The case continues to draw attention as proceedings move forward.
