The Delhi Police on Friday issued a clarification dismissing viral social media claims about a surge in missing girls in the Capital, stating that the content was being amplified through paid promotions for monetary gain.

In a post on X, Delhi Police said that after pursuing multiple leads, it found that the panic-inducing videos were part of a coordinated promotional effort. “Creating panic for monetary gains won’t be tolerated, and we’ll take strict action against such individuals,” the police said.

Viral videos misrepresent data

Several videos circulating online claimed that 807 people, including children, went missing in Delhi between January 1 and 15, citing police data. The posts sparked fear among residents, particularly parents.

However, police clarified that there is no cause for panic, adding that the figures actually indicate a decline compared to the same period in previous years. Officials said the data had been selectively presented without context to sensationalise the issue.

Official figures show no alarming trend

An analysis of missing persons data over the past three years shows that overall numbers have remained largely stable. In January 2024, a total of 1,684 people were reported missing, followed by 1,786 in January 2025 and 1,777 in January 2026. The number of missing children has also not shown any alarming spike.

Police emphasised that most missing cases are resolved and that established procedures are in place to trace missing persons promptly.

Warning against misinformation

Delhi Police urged citizens to rely on verified sources and official statements rather than unverified social media content. Officials said spreading misinformation not only causes unnecessary fear but also diverts attention from genuine cases that require urgent action.

Authorities reiterated that strict legal action would be initiated against those found deliberately spreading false or misleading information for profit.
