A 27-year-old woman commando with the Delhi Police Special Cell succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, five days after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband with a dumbbell at their residence in west Delhi. Police said the accused husband has been arrested and murder charges will be added to the case.
Assault at Mohan Garden flat
The deceased, Kajal, a 2022-batch recruit of the Delhi Police and a member of the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) unit, was allegedly attacked by her husband Ankur at their Mohan Garden flat on January 22. Police said she sustained severe head injuries after being struck multiple times with a dumbbell used for exercise.
Ankur, who works as a clerk with the Ministry of Defence, was initially booked for attempt to murder at Mohan Garden police station. Following Kajal’s death, the case will now be converted into one of murder, police confirmed.
Succumbed during treatment
After the alleged assault, Kajal was first taken to a private hospital in Mohan Garden and later shifted to Yashoda Hospital on January 24 as her condition deteriorated. She remained critical and passed away around 6 am on Tuesday.
The information regarding her death was first received by Sihani Gate police station in Ghaziabad, which alerted the Delhi Police. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday.
Family alleges dowry harassment
Kajal’s elder brother, Nikhil, a Delhi Police constable, alleged that dowry-related taunts had begun soon after her marriage in 2023. He said the couple had moved between Ganaur in Sonipat and Delhi due to ongoing disputes with Ankur’s family.
He also claimed that during a phone call on the day of the incident, he heard Kajal screaming before the call disconnected, and Ankur later allegedly told him he had killed her.
Probe continues
Police said no dowry-related charges have been added to the FIR so far, and investigations are ongoing. Kajal is survived by her one-and-a-half-year-old son.
