Delhi: In a unique protest against the arrest of the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with an alleged Delhi liquor policy scam, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and cadre will observe a mass fast today.
All AAP elected representatives and office-bearers will gather at Jantar Mantar for the mass fasting, which will begin at 11 am.
Security in and around Jantar Mantar has been beefed up. Gopal Rai, an AAP leader, has said that supporters of Arvind Kejriwal across India and abroad are participating in the mass fasting.
He stated that people can observe the fast at their homes and extend support to the jailed CM.
This is a new addition to the series of protests the AAP has launched in the recent past. Just a few days ago, the opposition INDIA bloc staged a protest at Ram Lila Maidan in Delhi to condemn the arrest of the Delhi CM.
AAP workers called for a “gherao” of PM Modi’s residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. Many workers and leaders of the Delhi-born party, including women, were seen being shoved and dragged into buses, which took them to various police stations in the national capital during the protest.
The AAP is questioning the timing of the CM’s arrest, alleging that the union government is misusing probe agencies like Enforcement Directorate and CBI to prevent the Delhi CM from campaigning and to cripple the opposition just before the general election.
Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in the alleged liquor policy scam after he skipped nine central agency summonses and has been running his government from the ED lock-up since then.
