New Delhi: Anticipating challenging weather conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued warnings for the coming days. Over the next two days, eastern and peninsular India is expected to be engulfed by a scorching heatwave, while the northeast region braces for intense rainfall and thunderstorms until April 9.

The IMD’s recent forecast aligns with earlier predictions, indicating a prolonged spell of heatwaves across central, northern plains, and southern India this summer. April to June is slated to witness extreme heat, particularly impacting central and western peninsular regions.

Specifically, isolated pockets in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, North Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are likely to experience heatwave conditions on April 5 and 6. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is anticipated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry from April 5 to 9.

Conversely, heavy rainfall is on the cards for Arunachal Pradesh from April 5 to 9, while Assam and Meghalaya brace for rain on April 5 and 6, followed by Odisha on April 7 and 8.

With the looming Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, emphasized the importance of preparedness. Precautionary measures have been discussed in detail during a recent two-day meeting with state governments, with advisories issued to mitigate the impacts of the impending heatwave.
