New Delhi: The interim budget presented by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday showcased a clear political strategy aimed at specific demographics, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s identification of four key groups: women, youth, farmers, and the poor. These categories were emphasized as crucial pillars in the government’s agenda, particularly as a response to the opposition’s call for a nationwide caste census.

Sitharaman outlined a series of measures tailored towards these groups, underscoring the government’s commitment to their social and economic welfare. With an eye on the upcoming general elections and projecting confidence for a third term, the finance minister reiterated the government’s focus on welfare policies and economic empowerment.

The budget speech highlighted the BJP’s emphasis on inclusive development and social justice, contrasting it with previous administrations’ approaches, which were labeled as nepotistic. The mention of a high-powered committee to address challenges posed by population growth reflects the government’s ideological concerns and its commitment to addressing demographic changes comprehensively.

Specifically addressing each demographic, Sitharaman emphasized the empowerment of women through entrepreneurship and policy interventions such as the outlawing of triple talaq and reservation of seats in legislative assemblies. The government’s efforts in empowering women, including through self-help groups and housing schemes, were lauded as instrumental in transforming rural socio-economic dynamics.

For farmers, the budget proposed subsidies, financial assistance, and investment promotion in post-harvest activities to boost agricultural growth. The rollback of contentious farm laws in 2021 was highlighted as a move to address concerns within the farming community.

Regarding youth, the government focused on educational reforms and skill development initiatives to enhance employability. The National Education Policy 2020 and various skill development programs were cited as pivotal in nurturing the country’s youth for future challenges.

Lastly, the budget underscored the government’s commitment to poverty alleviation, citing significant progress in lifting millions out of poverty through direct benefit transfer schemes.

Overall, the budget’s overarching theme was centered around addressing the needs and aspirations of these four demographics, crucial for the BJP’s electoral prospects and countering opposition efforts to localize electoral contests. The mention of eastern India’s development as a key focus area reflects the party’s expansion strategy beyond its traditional strongholds.
