Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal defended his dietary choices in jail against accusations from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), labeling their claims as “petty” and “politicized.” The ED alleged that Kejriwal consumed sugary foods like mangoes and sweets regularly, despite having type 2 diabetes, potentially to seek a medical bail.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi who is representing Kejriwal, refuted these claims, asserting that Kejriwal’s diet strictly adhered to his doctor’s recommendations before his arrest. The advocate told court.

Singhvi argued that the occasional inclusion of mangoes in Kejriwal’s meals was exaggerated, with mangoes being provided only three times out of 48 meals sent from his home. He argued that the glycemic index of mangoes was lower than that of other staple foods like brown or white rice.

The ED claimed that the CM eating mangoes, sweets, aalo-poori etc regularly

Kejriwal, permitted to have home-cooked meals in jail, refuted the allegations. In response, Kejriwal filed a fresh plea seeking daily consultations with his physician for 15 minutes, stressing his right to dignified healthcare even as a prisoner. However, the ED opposed this, claiming that Kejriwal’s diet did not align with his doctor’s prescribed regimen and asserting that Tihar jail’s medical facilities were adequate for his diabetes care.

The court reserved its decision on Kejriwal’s plea seeking daily consultation with his doctor for Monday, directing Tihar jail authorities to respond if necessary.
