A 70-year-old woman was reportedly tied to a tree and violently assaulted by her neighbour after a quarrel broke out regarding waste being dumped outside her home, police revealed on Monday.

The disturbing event took place on the morning of June 24 in Gautampura village. However, it only gained attention after a video of the attack surfaced on social media, triggering widespread public anger and condemnation.

The woman, identified as Huchamma, is said to have objected to her neighbour, Prema, repeatedly throwing trash in front of her residence. The confrontation escalated when Huchamma allegedly made offensive comments about Prema’s personal conduct, according to police.

Provoked by the remarks, Prema, along with two male family members, allegedly stormed into Huchamma’s home, forcibly dragged her outside, tied her to a nearby tree, and beat her, a senior officer stated.

Authorities confirmed that a case was promptly registered at the Anandapura police station on June 25, a day after the attack came to their attention. The primary accused, Prema—who is reportedly related to the elderly woman—has been taken into custody.

The video of the shocking act has drawn intense criticism online, with users calling for swift justice and stronger protection for senior citizens in rural areas.

Police say further investigations are underway and efforts are being made to identify and arrest the two male accomplices involved in the incident.
