A 20-year-old first-year engineering student of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), Basara, was found dead in her hostel room on Wednesday, with police suspecting suicide.

The student, identified as R Vasantha, hailed from Amangal mandal in Wanaparthy district. According to officials, her roommates had left for classes when the incident occurred.

Body found after door broken open

Campus security personnel reportedly noticed that the room was locked from the inside. On peering through a window, they found her hanging from the ceiling fan. The door was forced open, and she was taken to the campus dispensary, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was attempted.

She was later shifted to a hospital in Bhainsa, where doctors declared her dead.

Investigation underway

Preliminary inquiry suggested that the student had been in a relationship for several years, and that family opposition may have caused distress. Police also stated that a person known to her had allegedly died by suicide the previous night.

G Janaki Sharmila, Superintendent of Police, Nirmal, visited the campus and confirmed that a case has been registered by Bhainsa police. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances.

Meanwhile, a group of students staged a protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s chamber, seeking clarity over the incident and demanding a transparent inquiry.

Authorities have appealed for calm and assured that all aspects of the case will be examined.

If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress, seeking timely support from trusted individuals or professional counsellors can make a vital difference.
