Police in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district seized counterfeit currency notes worth nearly ₹16 lakh from the room of an imam in a madrasa near a mosque in Paithiya village on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off from the Maharashtra Police, a team from Khandwa raided the madrasa located under the jurisdiction of the Jawad police station and recovered bundles of fake notes hidden inside a box in the imam’s room.
The imam, identified as Zuber of Burhanpur, had been residing on the upper floor of the madrasa for a long time and was serving at the mosque adjacent to it.
Police sources said the information came after Maharashtra Police arrested Zuber and an accomplice in Malegaon a day earlier with counterfeit notes worth ₹10 lakh. Following their arrest, Khandwa Police conducted the search and found another ₹16 lakh in fake currency.
Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the network and origins of the counterfeit money
