Hapur: In a country that revers women as ‘goddess’, the punishment for raping a woman has always be a topic of debate.
However, in a bizarre incident, a Haryana Panchayat delivered a classic judgement of five shoe slaps as punishment for two persons accused of gang-raping a girl in Hisar district here.
The accused walked scathe-free after the ‘stern’ punishment while the ordeal for the victim continued. She was asked by the Panchayat to leave the village after the rape.
It is said that though the girl had lodged a police complaint against the accused, the Panchayat ordered punishment even before the police could initiate action.
It may be recalled that in August this year, a young Dalit woman moved the Supreme Court against a Khap Panchayat in Uttar Pradesh for issuing diktat that she and her sister be raped and paraded naked in their village as revenge for their brother’s action of eloping with a married girl from the Jat community.
