A five-year-old boy lost his life after being run over by a truck in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area on Sunday, triggering grief and anger among local residents and raising concerns over road safety in crowded neighbourhoods.

According to police, the incident occurred near Lohia Camp in the Haiderpur area. Information about the road accident was received at Shalimar Bagh Police Station, following which a police team rushed to the spot.

Child found trapped under truck

A senior police officer said that upon reaching the location, police found a truck standing at the site and the child lying critically injured beneath it. Locals had gathered by then, visibly distressed by the scene.

The child was immediately rushed to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The sudden loss of the young child left family members inconsolable.

Eyewitness flags rash driving

Police said an eyewitness at the spot alleged that the truck was being driven in a rash and negligent manner. Based on the statement, police traced the driver, apprehended him and seized the truck involved in the incident.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility. Police officials said statements of witnesses are being recorded and technical evidence is also being examined.

Safety concerns raised

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by children in densely populated residential areas, especially near informal settlements and busy roads. Residents of the area have demanded stricter enforcement against reckless driving and better traffic regulation to prevent such tragedies.

Police have appealed to drivers to exercise extreme caution in residential zones and near areas where children are likely to be present.
