In a major breakthrough, Indian authorities claim to have thwarted a large-scale terrorist plot targeting prominent cities, including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mumbai (Nariman House and Gateway of India), and unspecified high-profile military bases. Sources suggest that the Islamic State (ISIS) may have been behind the planned attacks.

The potential strikes, described as among the most significant terror threats to India, were reportedly revealed through the confession of Shahnawaz, also known as Shafi Uzzama. He is a suspected Islamic State operative arrested by Delhi Police last month. Shahnawaz’s statement has led investigators to believe that Aligarh Muslim University students may have been involved in the terrorist plot.

Islamic State activities seem to have focused on Pune, according to NDTV report. Shahnawaz, wanted in the Islamic State Pune module case, reportedly fled the city in July after two associates were apprehended. He reached Delhi and remained underground until his recent arrest.

Shahnawaz’s confession details his radicalization journey, starting from his involvement in illegal activities in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh. He mentioned his training under Anbar al-Awlaki, a senior Al Qaeda operative killed in a US drone strike in Yemen in 2011. Shahnawaz claimed affiliation with Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamist organization with the goal of re-establishing the Islamic Caliphate.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted raids linked to Hizb ut-Tahrir, including operations in Bhopal in August. Earlier raids in May, spanning Telangana and Madhya Pradesh, resulted in 16 arrests and the dismantling of several terror modules.

This development underscores the ongoing challenges posed by extremist ideologies and plots, prompting heightened security measures to prevent potential large-scale attacks on Indian soil.
