In Gaza, daily life is defined by hunger and scarcity. Ghada al-Kafarna, a mother of 10, waits for hours in line at a community kitchen, relying on charity meals to feed her family. However, closures of these kitchens due to the ongoing conflict leave her children hungry and desperate. Similarly, Mohammed Abu Rami, a disabled father of 11, depends entirely on charity kitchens for food. With no income and rising food prices, both families face unimaginable challenges.
Many others in Gaza are in a similar plight. Fadia Wadi, a mother of eight, struggles to feed her children, even using spoiled flour filled with insects due to the unavailability of fresh supplies. “Hunger forces us to make sacrifices,” she says, reflecting the grim reality for countless others.
The situation is exacerbated by Israel’s blockade and restrictions on food aid, leaving families without access to basic necessities. The community kitchens, which many depend on, can be lifesaving, but with aid disrupted, many go without food for days at a time. In some areas, desperate crowds gather outside bakeries for a loaf of bread, leading to tragic stampedes.
Families are forced to survive on a fraction of what they once had, facing skyrocketing prices for basic items like vegetables. “Onions and salt are now luxuries,” says Alaa al-Batniji, a father from Deir el-Balah. His story illustrates the extreme inflation that has gripped Gaza’s markets, making it almost impossible for displaced families to afford essential goods.
The emotional toll of this ongoing struggle is immense. Many parents, like Ghada, face not only physical exhaustion but also profound emotional distress, as they are forced to beg for food and witness their children suffer. As one father said, “Our patience is running out, and death feels like the only escape.”
