Greater Noida: A second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at Sharda University allegedly died by suicide in the women’s hostel on Friday night. The victim, Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, left behind a note accusing two faculty members of humiliation and prolonged mental harassment, police confirmed.
Following the incident, police at Knowledge Park Police Station registered a case and arrested two university staff members, identified as Mahinder and Shairy, based on a complaint from the student’s family. Protests erupted on the campus, especially within the hostel, with students demanding justice and transparency.
In her suicide note, Jyoti named the two teachers, alleging they mentally tormented her for an extended period. “They humiliated me… I can’t live like this anymore,” she wrote. She also expressed her wish that the two face consequences for their actions.
Greater Noida ADCP Sudhir Kumar confirmed the arrests and said the police are conducting a thorough probe. A forensic team was deployed to examine the hostel room and collect potential evidence. Jyoti’s body has been sent for post-mortem.
Sharda University, in an official statement, announced the formation of a high-power inquiry committee to look into the matter and has suspended the two accused staff members. The university said it is fully cooperating with authorities.
This tragedy follows another recent student suicide case in Odisha, where a college student died after self-immolation, also citing harassment.
