Bhavnagar: Brother assaults sister over relationship
A shocking case of sexual assault has come to light in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, where a 29-year-old man raped his 22-year-old sister twice and burned her with lit cigarettes because he opposed her consensual relationship with another man from their village.
According to police officials, the accused, who is married and works as a driver, was aware of his sister’s relationship, which had continued for about three years. Instead of accepting it, he allegedly used the information to blackmail and control her.
Details of the assaults
The first assault took place on July 13 when the accused’s wife was away visiting her parents. Police said the man threatened his sister with a knife before forcing himself on her.
The second incident occurred on August 22, when the accused’s wife had again gone out for personal reasons. On this occasion, the accused not only raped his sister but also stubbed a lit cigarette on her right thigh, causing burn injuries.
Victim seeks help, police intervene
The survivor gathered courage to report the incidents after the second assault. She reached out to the state’s women’s helpline, narrating the ordeal. Authorities immediately intervened and facilitated the registration of a formal complaint with Bhavnagar police.
Following the complaint, the police arrested the accused and carried out medical examinations of both the victim and the accused.
Evidence and ongoing investigation
Investigating officers confirmed that the knife used during the assaults, along with the clothes worn by the accused, have been seized. Officials stated that further investigation is underway to establish all details of the case and to file charges appropriately.
Stronger action demanded
Cases of sexual violence within families often remain hidden due to fear, stigma and coercion. Police have assured that this case will be pursued with seriousness. Women’s rights activists in Gujarat have reiterated the importance of strong legal action in such cases, stressing that survivors must be given protection and support to pursue justice.
