Cheruvahoor: M Vishnu, a wood polishing worker from Kizhakkemuri, has emerged as a local hero after saving two schoolboys from drowning in the Karyangode River near the Achamthuruthy footbridge.

The incident occurred yesterday evening when a group of students went to bathe in the river. Suddenly, two boys—C.V. Abhinand (Class 9) and C.V. Ashwin (Class 8) from Kutamah Government Higher Secondary School—were swept away by a powerful undercurrent. Both are first cousins, born to two brothers.

Upon hearing the distressed calls from their friends on the riverbank, Vishnu rushed to the scene and saw the boys struggling. Without hesitation, he plunged into the monsoon-swollen waters and brought them safely to shore. He was quickly supported by Adarsh and Devanand, who also leapt into action to assist in the rescue.

The site is known to have dangerous undercurrents during the rainy season. Despite past tragedies—including the drowning of two Plus Two students five years ago—children continue to frequent the area in the evenings.

Local residents have lauded Vishnu, Adarsh, and Devanand for their selfless bravery. Their swift response prevented what could have been yet another tragedy at the notorious river spot.
