Shimla: Extreme weather devastates apple crops, farmers demand government action
Apple farmers in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, are facing unprecedented losses this season due to adverse weather conditions and recurring agricultural challenges. Heavy rains, hailstorms, and unseasonal downpours have damaged apple crops across key growing regions, while the spread of leaf drop disease has further compounded the problem, leaving many farmers struggling to recover costs and sustain livelihoods.
Anil Deshta, a farmer from Shimla, described the impact: “This time, the weather has greatly affected the apple crops. Heavy rainfall completely destroyed our produce, and the apples did not even fetch their production value at the market. Deteriorating road conditions have caused delays, with many apples reaching the market late.” Many farmers report that the cost of cultivation far exceeds the returns, forcing them to consider alternative crops or livelihoods.
The farmers have appealed to state authorities for immediate intervention, including compensation for crop losses, better infrastructure support, and measures to control the spread of leaf drop disease. Experts note that Himachal’s apple economy significantly contributes to local employment and the state’s revenue, and prolonged disruptions could have wider economic repercussions.
Despite these challenges, some farmers are cautiously optimistic. They emphasize that timely government support and improved weather forecasting mechanisms could help mitigate future losses. However, with changing climate patterns and frequent unseasonal rainfall, apple cultivation in Himachal Pradesh faces increasing uncertainty, making both short-term relief and long-term adaptation strategies critical for sustaining the industry.
