Hubballi: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti has applauded Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu GRJ’s initiative to reduce non-teaching duties assigned to schoolteachers. In a letter to Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Horatti emphasized that the district’s SSLC results for 2024–25 were below expectations and that urgent steps are needed to raise educational standards.
He noted that the DC had convened a meeting on June 25, marking the start of the academic year, to identify ways to improve teaching outcomes and address issues faced by teachers. During the meeting, it emerged that excessive administrative responsibilities—especially related to midday meal distribution—were hampering teachers’ ability to focus on classroom instruction.
Teachers are required to maintain attendance logs, update data on midday meals, milk distribution, and nutrition supplements—all in real-time on digital platforms. Many of them lack adequate technical skills, leading to stress and health problems, Horatti observed.
He stressed that for successful implementation of government education schemes, it is crucial to create separate administrative cells under the guidance of senior officials. This would allow teachers to concentrate on core academic activities and improve student performance.
Calling it a state-wide concern, Horatti urged all deputy commissioners to work in tandem with education department authorities to find holistic solutions. He asserted that unburdening teachers of non-academic tasks is essential for improving the SSLC results and overall quality of education across Karnataka.
