Salon (UP): Defending her decision to not contest from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Wednesday, said that she backed out based on the party’s decision and not because she is afraid of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
If I tend to get scared, I will sit at home and not enter politics, she told the media while on a campaign trail for Rahul Gandhi in Amethi and assured that she is in politics for the long haul.
It can be recalled that Priyanka had backed out of contesting against the Prime Minister from the Varanasi constituency, which will go to polls on May 19 in the last phase. The party had, instead, decided to field Ajay Rai, a local Congress leader. Priyanka had explained that it was the decision of the party for her to withdraw.
“Before deciding not to contest from Varanasi I took the advice of all senior leaders of our party and colleagues in Uttar Pradesh.
“They felt that I have a responsibility here of looking after 41 seats and then I felt that if I contested from the Varanasi seat, then they (candidates) would be disappointed if I focused on only one place,” she had said and added that she did not want to disappoint the candidates who wanted her to campaign for them.
