In a heart-wrenching incident, a 26-year-old student of IIT Bombay tragically died by suicide after leaping from his hostel’s terrace in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Rohit Sinha, hailed from Delhi and was pursuing his fourth year in Meta Science at the prestigious institute. The incident is believed to have occurred around 2:30 am, sending shockwaves across the campus community.
According to Mumbai Police, Rohit is said to have jumped from the top floor of the hostel building. He was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital by fellow students, but medical staff declared him brought dead upon arrival.
An officer noted that another hostel resident, who was on a phone call on the terrace at the time, witnessed the moment Rohit jumped, adding crucial insight for the investigation.
Authorities have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and are now probing into the circumstances that led to the student’s drastic step. As of now, no suicide note has been found, and the cause behind this tragic act remains unclear.
Campus sources say the atmosphere at IIT Bombay is somber, with many students grappling with the emotional aftermath. The institute has not yet issued an official statement, but counselors are reportedly being made available to support those affected.
