New Delhi: India has advised its citizens to defer travel to Nepal until the situation stabilises, following escalating protests in Kathmandu that led to the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and the suspension of multiple flights. The unrest was triggered by violent demonstrations led by Gen Z protesters, who set fire near key areas around the airport.
Ministry of External Affairs issues advisory
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an advisory urging all Indian nationals in Nepal to shelter in their current residences, avoid going out, and follow local safety instructions. Citizens are also advised to monitor advisories from the Embassy of India in Kathmandu for updates and assistance.
MEA spokespersons stressed the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safety protocols, particularly as the curfew remains in effect in Kathmandu and other affected cities.
Flight disruptions and airline responses
The escalating situation forced several airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express, to suspend flights to and from Kathmandu. Early morning flights between Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru were able to operate, but as conditions worsened, multiple flights hovered near KTM before diverting or returning to India.
IndiGo tweeted that the airport has been closed for operations, and all flights remain suspended until further notice. Passengers were advised to claim refunds or opt for alternative flights. Air India announced a one-time waiver on rescheduling charges for passengers with confirmed bookings to or from Kathmandu until September 11. The airline also emphasised that passenger and crew safety remains the highest priority.
Flight cancellations and diversions
-
Air India cancelled four flights on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route, including AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218, and AI211/212.
IndiGo flights 6E1153 (Delhi-KTM) and 6E1157 (Mumbai-KTM) diverted to Lucknow due to smoke and unsafe landing conditions.
Air India Express suspended its Bengaluru-Kathmandu flight.
Nepal Airlines also cancelled operations for affected flights, while Kathmandu Airport issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) indicating closure until further notice.
According to reports, AI 217, which departed from Delhi at 11:38 am, had to return due to smoke at the airport’s final approach and landed back at IGIA at 3:10 pm. Other early morning flights managed to land safely before the situation deteriorated.
Safety measures and recommendations
MEA urged Indian citizens to:
-
Avoid traveling to Nepal until conditions improve
Remain indoors and follow local safety advisories
Contact the Embassy of India in Kathmandu for assistance at +977-9808602881 and +977-9810326134 (both WhatsApp enabled)
Indian authorities have also been coordinating with airlines and local authorities to monitor developments and ensure the safe resumption of flights once the airport reopens.
Conclusion
The protests in Kathmandu, which led to the airport closure and flight disruptions, highlight the severity of the unrest in Nepal. Indian citizens are advised to remain cautious, defer non-essential travel, and stay updated with official announcements until the situation stabilises.
