India is celebrating its 15th National Voters’ Day (NVD) today, marking a significant milestone for the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is also commemorating 75 years of service in 2025. The event, held in New Delhi, will be graced by President Droupadi Murmu, who will present the Best Electoral Practices Awards to distinguished state and district officials.
National Voters’ Day, observed annually since 2011, aims to promote voter participation and raise awareness about the importance of voting across the country. The day commemorates the founding of the ECI in 1950, with a focus on encouraging citizens, especially young voters, to actively engage in the democratic process. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government initiated the celebration to honor new voters, with a special emphasis on enrolling the youth and issuing them voter identity cards (EPIC).
NVD 2025 holds particular significance, as it highlights India’s progress toward a youthful and gender-balanced electoral roll. The theme for this year, ‘Nothing like voting, I vote for sure,’ continues from the previous year and emphasizes the crucial role voting plays in shaping the country’s leadership.
The ECI also announced that India’s electoral roll is nearing the 100 crore mark, with 99.1 crore registered voters. This milestone is accompanied by a notable increase in young electors, with 21.7 crore individuals in the 18-29 age group, and a gender ratio improvement in the electoral database.
