CanKids Kidscan, a national organization dedicated to childhood cancer care, revealed on Tuesday that around 1,500 cases of Retinoblastoma (RB), a rare eye cancer in children under five, are diagnosed in India annually. Goa has also seen cases, with two reported in the past year.
Speaking at the International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) conference in Dona Paula, Poonam Bagai, founder-chairperson of CanKids Kidscan, highlighted the organization’s efforts to improve care for RB patients. Through its initiative, the ‘Fight RB India national interest group,’ the organization aims to provide comprehensive care and financial aid to affected families by 2030.
The group also seeks to raise survival rates to 80%, aligning with international standards. Bagai emphasized the importance of early detection, awareness, and accessible treatment to combat the challenges posed by this rare yet serious condition.
This initiative represents a significant step towards transforming childhood cancer care in India, ensuring a brighter future for young patients and their families.
