Kamal Haasan Defends Ambedkar’s Legacy Amid Political Row
Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has urged Parliament to draw inspiration from Dr. BR Ambedkar’s vision for progress, amid controversies surrounding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on the Constitution’s architect.
Haasan, in a post on X, emphasized that Ambedkar’s contributions laid the foundation of modern India. “While Gandhiji freed India from foreign oppression, Dr. Ambedkar liberated India from its ancient shackles of social injustice,” he wrote. He called for protecting Ambedkar’s legacy, warning against its misuse to offend sentiments.
Haasan proposed meaningful debates in Parliament to mark 75 years since the Constitution’s adoption. “As a modern and moral global power, we should honor this milestone with discussions on Ambedkar’s transformative ideas,” he stated.
The row over Amit Shah’s remarks also triggered protests in Parliament, with BJP and INDIA bloc MPs accusing each other of tarnishing Ambedkar’s legacy. Tensions escalated as Congress alleged BJP’s intent to alter the Constitution, while BJP countered with similar accusations.
The debate around Ambedkar’s ideology has become a focal point in the Winter Session, with parties invoking his name to solidify their positions.
