Three elephants at Guruvayur Temple in Thrissur, Kerala, endured continuous beatings by mahouts at the temple’s care center. One video of the abuse even depicted an elephant limping due to the repeated assaults. In response, authorities have suspended two mahouts involved in the case.

Videos circulating on social media depicted the mahouts striking the defenseless animals with sticks used for elephant training. The elephants subjected to the abuse have been identified as Krishna, Kesavankutty, and Gajendra. Notably, Krishna was gifted to the Guruvayur temple by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Krishna and Kesavankutty were repeatedly beaten by their mahouts, while Gajendra was observed walking with a noticeable limp, suggesting possible mistreatment. The mahouts assaulted the helpless animals while they were tethered at their care center. One video even showed a mahout bathing an elephant while another struck the animal from behind with a stick.

Following the incidents, the mahouts responsible for Krishna and Kesavankutty were suspended, as reported by OnManorama. The affected elephants underwent medical examinations to assess their injuries. Dr. VK Vijayan, Chairman of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, directed the deputy administrator overseeing the Guruvayur Temple elephant care center to provide a detailed inquiry report on the matter, as per OnManorama’s report.
