A video of an elephant going berserk and attacking another elephant at the Tharakkal temple festival in Kerala has emerged on social media. The incident happened around 10.30 pm on Friday when the elephant, Guruvayur Ravikrishnan, carrying the ‘Ammathiruvady’ deity, lost control and attacked the other elephant, Puthupally Arjunan.
In the video, an elephant is seen charging at Puthupally Arjunan, another elephant that is carrying the god “Arattupuzha,” and pursuing it for nearly a kilometer. The elephant tried to attack Sreekumar, the mahout, three times before he managed to escape. The incident sparked fear among the faithful, and numerous festival attendees were hurt. Injuries also befell people carried by the elephants, and people sitting atop them attempted to flee but tumbled and suffered injuries.

Both the elephants could be seen charging and chasing each other in the viral video. Both the elephants were later brought under control by the elephant squad, reported local news outlet Mathrubhumi.
The incident occurs at a time when Kerala is still plagued by the problem of conflicts between humans and animals. There have been nine recorded cases of wild animal attacks resulting in fatalities in Kerala.
A wild elephant recently attacked and killed a sixty-two-year-old woman in a forest near Athirappally. A 42-year-old man lost his life in February as a result of an attack by a wild elephant that wandered into a community close to Mananthavad.
