Three minors have been detained and one adult arrested by police in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, in relation to a viral video that purports to show a group of Holi revellers harassing a Muslim man and two women who are with him.

A group of children surrounds a man and two women who are riding bikes in the video. Using a pipe, the Holi celebrants are seen sprinkling the women with water. The harassment persists despite the women’s apparent protests. Before long, the women are also doused with water using buckets. The man and one of the women have their faces forcefully painted with color by the young people.

As the women protest, a voice is hearing saying that “this is a 70-year-old tradition”. Eventually, the trio’s ordeal ends and the revellers let them go, raising religious slogans as the bike speeds away.

Soon after the video went viral, Bijnor police chief Neeraj Kumar Jadaun asked local police to take action.

The investigation revealed that the incident happened close to the Dhampur police station. The police viewed the widely shared footage and determined who was who.

A case has been filed under multiple sections, such as assaulting a woman, causing harm voluntarily, and wrongful restraint. In this regard, the police have detained three minors and arrested one person, identified as Aniruddh.

Senior officer Neeraj Jadaun of the Bijnor police said in a video message uploaded on X that people shouldn’t harass others on Holi. “Please refrain from forcing people to wear colors. Anyone who breaks the law will face consequences from the police, he declared.
