Monojit Mishra, known on campus as “Mango”, has emerged as the central figure in a horrific case of sexual assault that has shocked Kolkata and exposed years of institutional neglect. Mishra, accused of raping a 24-year-old law student inside the college on Wednesday, is described by several current and former students as a serial predator whose violent, misogynistic behavior was repeatedly ignored.

According to multiple accounts, Monojit had long harassed female students—asking inappropriate questions like “Will you marry me?” to several women on campus, filming private moments, circulating morphed images, and body-shaming victims in WhatsApp groups he controlled. Despite a string of molestation, harassment, and even extortion complaints filed against him over the years, college authorities and political connections allegedly shielded him.

“He acted like the college don. He ran the WhatsApp groups, posted lewd content, and removed people at will. He had full access to staff rooms and administrative offices,” said a first-year student. Another student revealed that Monojit had even threatened and assaulted participants of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest movement last year.

The college’s silence is being widely condemned. A sexual harassment complaint was submitted to the teacher-in-charge—but no action followed. “We were told to avoid him, but no one could touch him because he flaunted political clout,” said a former student.

Despite past reports to police stations like Gariahat, Monojit remained entrenched in the institution for years—allegedly even repeating classes for over a decade to retain his influence.

As a Special Investigation Team (SIT) reviews CCTV footage and retrieved videos from his phone, students are demanding accountability—not just for Mishra, but for the system that protected him.
