TS Scaria (84), fondly known as Kunjettan, who relentlessly advocated for a road connection between Kannur and Wayanad without a mountain pass, passed away in Kottiyoor. A visionary known for his quiet determination, Scaria spent over four decades championing a more accessible alternative to the hilly routes that traditionally connected the districts.

Scaria, the eldest of eight siblings, was the son of TS Scaria and Eli, who migrated to Kottiyoor from Teecoy near Pala in Kottayam nearly 75 years ago. After settling in Ambayathodu, he began exploring paths to Mananthavady, with help from local tribal communities. This exploration led to the discovery and development of the Kottiyoor–Ambayathodu–Thalappuzha 44th mile road, which gained popularity as the road without a mountain pass.

Despite a road being constructed, the government initially denied approval. It was only during the tenure of Kanthalot Kunjambu, then Forest Minister, that the route was officially sanctioned. However, progress was again stalled when the forest department blocked access, citing regulatory concerns.

Scaria’s efforts remain etched in the memory of Thuruthi’s residents, who affectionately called him Kunjettan—a tribute to his humility and relentless community service.

He will be laid to rest today at 11 a.m. at St. George Church, Ambayathodu.
