A six-year-old Labrador named Ruby has become a local hero in Changanassery after surviving a dangerous viper bite while protecting her family.

Ruby the Labrador becomes centre of attention in Ruby Nagar

A six-year-old Labrador named Ruby has captured the admiration of residents in Ruby Nagar, Kottayam, after bravely protecting her family from a large viper and surviving a severe venomous bite. The dog, who belongs to Mullasseril Salim Kumar and his wife Sudha, lives near Assumption College in Changanassery.

Ruby’s dramatic recovery has turned her into a symbol of courage, with neighbours calling her a “fighter” and celebrating what they describe as her miraculous comeback.

Viper spotted beneath scooter, Ruby leaps into action

The incident occurred around 9.45 p.m. on 25 November, when a viper was noticed beneath a scooter parked in the family’s front yard. Ruby had been barking persistently, prompting the family to check the yard. Only then did they spot the snake coiled beneath the vehicle.

Despite attempts to pull her away, Ruby refused to retreat. In the commotion that followed, the snake bit her. Even after the bite, she remained alert and protective, standing her ground to ensure the safety of her family.

Snake catcher Shijo Kuttissery from Vazhappally, who was alerted immediately, rushed to the spot and captured the viper safely.

Critical condition and dramatic fight for survival

Following the bite, Ruby was rushed to a private veterinary clinic in Thuruthy, run by registered veterinary surgeon Dr Unnikrishnan. By the time she arrived, she was already in a critical condition.

With swift medical intervention and what her owners described as a “fight from the brink,” Ruby slowly began to recover. Her resilience has earned her the nickname “superwoman” from those who witnessed the ordeal

Snake catchers caution public about seasonal risks

According to snake catcher Shijo Kuttissery, snake sightings typically increase during November, December and January, with reptiles seeking warm shelters near homes, footwear, and vehicles.

“Be careful while moving parked vehicles and while leaving footwear in the yard,” he cautioned. Shijo, who has responded to hundreds of snake-rescue calls in the region, also urged residents to avoid attempting to handle snakes themselves and to always call trained rescuers.

Community celebrates Ruby’s recovery

Residents of Ruby Nagar and surrounding areas have been visiting the family to check on Ruby and bring small treats as tokens of appreciation. Many have shared that her courage prevented what could have been a dangerous situation for the family.

Salim Kumar expressed gratitude to the veterinary team, snake catcher, and neighbours who supported them through the ordeal. “Ruby protected us without hesitation. We owe her everything,” he said.

Guidance for pet owners during snake season

Veterinary experts advise pet owners in Kerala’s semi-urban and rural regions to remain vigilant during peak snake activity months. Recommendations include:

  • keeping yards well-lit in the evenings
  • clearing leaf litter and debris
  • inspecting parked vehicles before approaching
  • monitoring pets during outdoor hours
  • knowing the nearest veterinary emergency facility

Experts emphasise that early detection and prompt medical attention often make the difference between life and death in snakebite cases involving pets.

Ruby returns home

Ruby has now returned home and is recovering steadily. Her determination, combined with timely medical care and community support, has made her a beloved figure in the neighbourhood.

Residents say her story is a reminder of both the instinctive loyalty of pets and the importance of being alert to wildlife during Kerala’s peak snake season.
