A 29-year-old man was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly killing his father and seriously injuring his mother following a family dispute at Kandalloor in Alappuzha. The accused, Navjith (29), a lawyer and resident of Peedikathara, Kandaloor South, reportedly attacked his parents with a knife during an argument.

Argument escalated into violent attack

According to police, the incident occurred around 9 pm on Sunday. Navjith, who lived with his parents, returned home and became involved in a heated argument with his father Natarajan. The dispute escalated, and he allegedly attacked his father with a knife. When his mother Sindhu tried to intervene, she too was assaulted and sustained serious injuries.

Neighbours, alarmed by the commotion, immediately alerted the Kanakakunnu Police, who reached the spot promptly. Officers broke open a locked kitchen door to enter the house and rescued both parents with the help of local residents.

Father dies; mother undergoing treatment

Both Natarajan and Sindhu were rushed to hospital. However, Natarajan succumbed to his injuries. Sindhu is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvalla, where her condition continues to be monitored.

Police said that preliminary investigation suggests Navjith may have harboured resentment towards his parents for sending him to Coimbatore to take the bar examination.

Police intervention prevented further harm

Police noted that their swift action likely saved Sindhu’s life. When officers arrived, Navjith allegedly charged at them with a knife, but they subdued him and took him into custody without further injury to others.

Navjith’s wife was away at her parental home for childbirth, leaving only the accused and his parents at the residence during the incident. The couple were married last year.

Accused produced before court

Navjith was produced before the Mavelikkara Judicial First Class Magistrate Court–I on Monday. Police have intensified their investigation and are gathering scientific and forensic evidence from the scene to establish the sequence of events.
