Mumbai: It’s high time that the Mumbai airport addresses the lack of wheelchairs, with the recent incident of an 80 year old collapsing on his way out of the airport.
The man, on arriving on a flight from New York, decided to walk, so as to give the wheelchair to his wife, who accompanied him on the journey. Following her alongside for about a kilometer and a half, the man finally collapsed.
This could be a result of the long walk and the flight, which was delayed by more than two hours, landing at 2.10 pm, when it was expected to reach the city at 11.30 am. He was then taken to Mumbai airport medical facility and from there, to the Nanavati hospital
Airport sources later reported that there were 15 wheelchairs, while the number of wheelchair passengers on the flight was 32, forcing almost half of them to compromise.
From this, it is only clear that the demand for wheelchairs is high. However, the airport spokesperson did reveal that assistants had requested the passenger to wait till they made provisions for both him and his wife. The man, however, denied the offer, saying that he would choose to walk along with his wife.
He also suggested that this was in the case of a lot of couples, where spouses weren’t comfortable with leaving each other and preferring to go together from the airport to the terminal.
With that, the Air India staff are now in touch with the man’s family members, to extend their help if necessary.
