In a worrisome development, the absence of inspections by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sparked concerns regarding the safety of mangoes flooding the market. Unchecked mangoes have become a focal point for serious food safety apprehensions, prompting authorities to caution consumers about the risks associated with purchasing the beloved fruit.

Traditionally, artificially grown mangoes undergo stringent monitoring by the FDA to ensure consumer safety. However, the ongoing Lok Sabha elections have led to a manpower shortage, disrupting this critical inspection process. As a result, consumers are increasingly wary about the quality and safety of mangoes available in the market.

Inquiries made at the Joint Commissioner’s Office have revealed a notable lack of action regarding mango inspections this season. Consequently, consumers are advised to exercise caution and buy mangoes only from trusted sources, as the crop has not undergone its usual scrutiny for quality and safety.

To uphold the safety and quality standards of seasonal fruits, the FDA typically conducts comprehensive food safety checks, including pesticide residue testing, quality inspection, ripeness and maturity testing, microbiological testing, compliance with food safety standards, labelling requirements, and monitoring of storage and transportation conditions.

The absence of regulatory oversight has allowed sellers of adulterated and unripe mangoes to flourish in the market, raising serious health concerns among consumers. With mangoes flooding the market from various regions, citizens are left uncertain about the authenticity and quality of the fruit, particularly when purchasing from street or door-to-door vendors.

Following a meeting, the FDA has issued directives to fruit sellers in the market regarding mango safety measures. However, reports of calcium carbonate being used in ripening mangoes have further heightened health concerns among consumers. While FDA officials attribute the delay in regulatory actions to manpower engagement in election work, they have assured that steps will be taken post-election to address the issue.

Consumers are urged to remain vigilant when purchasing mangoes and to opt for established mandais and markets within the city to ensure authenticity and quality. Regular market inspections are conducted, and punitive action is taken against vendors found violating regulations, according to RS Shinde, Bharari Team Division Head of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). As consumers navigate through the mango season, maintaining vigilance and awareness is crucial to safeguard against potential health risks associated with unchecked mangoes in the market.
