Inside her opulent Nepean Sea Road condominium, a 63-year-old woman is accused of being strangled to death on Tuesday afternoon. Since their recently hired house helper has been absent since the incident, the Malabar Hill police, who have opened a murder case, believe that he is the culprit.

Jyoti Shah, who resided on the 20th floor of Tahnee Heights in Malabar Hill with her husband Mukesh, has been identified as the deceased woman, according to the police. In south Mumbai, Mukesh owns a jewelry showroom.

An officer said, “As usual, Mukesh left his apartment around noon for work. However, at around 3 pm, he tried calling his wife for some work and as she was not answering the calls, he sensed something amiss due to which he left everything and went back home.”

On reaching his apartment, he found his wife lying motionless in the bedroom. Since she was not responding, he rushed her to the hospital where she was declared dead before admission.

According to police, the woman was strangled. After informing the Malabar Hill police, a squad was dispatched to the scene, and late on Tuesday, a murder case was filed.

“The family had hired a new housekeeper through their known person’s recommendation,” an officer stated. “He started work on Tuesday.” Since he has been AWOL since the incident, we believe he killed her.

The CCTV footage that showed him leaving the building’s premises has also been examined by the detectives.

“We have learnt that he is from Darbhanga in Bihar and we are trying to trace him,” said an officer. When asked whether the house-help had escaped with any valuables, the officer added, “Shah’s body is still in the hospital for post-mortem. We are trying to understand whether she was killed using a cloth or a rope or by hands itself. The family is still grieving, but we strongly believe that the accused has stolen valuables from the house. However, we are yet to confirm or identify the valuables that have been stolen.”
