In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity and gender justice, Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Mumbai has sanctioned a menstrual leave policy for its students. The policy, proposed by the Student Bar Council and unanimously approved by the Executive Council on April 4, aims to address the unique needs of menstruating individuals on campus.

Key Features of the Policy

  • Students will be entitled to one menstrual leave per month, with a maximum of five leaves per semester.
  • No medical certificate is required; students are required to self-certify within seven days of availing the leave.
  • To be eligible, students must maintain a minimum attendance of 67%, as mandated by university regulations.
  • The leave will not be applicable during examinations or viva voce.

Inclusive Approach

The policy extends beyond gender binaries and applies to all menstruating students on campus, ensuring that diverse needs are met and respected.

Statement from MNLU Registrar

Dr. Pratapsinh Salunke, Registrar in-charge at MNLU, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and gender justice, applauding the initiative as a progressive step. He affirmed the essential nature of such leaves and encouraged educational institutions to adopt similar pragmatic approaches.

Awareness and Support Initiatives

MNLU Mumbai, in collaboration with the Student Bar Association, is actively promoting awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance access to menstrual hygiene products on campus and provide counseling services for students facing menstrual-related challenges.

Widespread Adoption

MNLU Mumbai joins the ranks of several other national law universities in India that have implemented menstrual leave policies, including MNLU Aurangabad, NLIU Bhopal, DNLU Jabalpur, NALSAR Hyderabad, and NLUJA Assam. This collective effort underscores a broader commitment to prioritizing the well-being and inclusivity of students across educational institutions in the country.
