New Delhi: Mahindra & Mahindra, which was so far focused on making medical equipment like ventilators, aerosol boxes and face shields for medical practitioners fighting COVID-19, will now turn its attention towards helping the migrant workers who are going back home.

The company will be providing support to the people going back home during the lockdown through its Automotive and Tractor dealer partners.

The work will be done in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director, Auto and Farm Sectors at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, taking to Twitter on Thursday, wrote that the company will work with 139 District Magistrates in UP, Bihar and Odisha to provide support to the migrants.

Responding to the tweet, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra informed that the company will be “looking at longer term initiatives as well”. He encouraged his colleagues to address the migrants’ immediate problems and “look at how we can assist, along with our dealer community, in their last-mile transportation issues”.

Scores of migrant labourers have been travelling back home to be with their families during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While many have been sent home in trains and buses, many have opted to make the journey on foot as they either do not want to wait or they cannot afford the ticket charges. Many have already died on the way to their homes and their heartbreaking stories have moved the nation to demand that more be done for them.
