A man was arrested in Odisha’s Kendrapara district for allegedly killing his 70-year-old mother after his parents scolded him over his alcohol addiction, police said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Bijay Sahoo, reportedly returned home to Patuni village on Saturday night in an intoxicated condition.
Parents scolded son over drinking habit
According to police, Bijay’s parents questioned and scolded him for frequently consuming alcohol, which led to a heated argument inside the house.
During the confrontation, the accused allegedly tried to attack his 74-year-old father, Nabaghan Sahoo, a retired CRPF jawan.
Police said Bijay’s mother, Hiramani Sahoo, intervened to protect her husband when the accused allegedly hit her on the head with a wooden plank.
Hearing screams from the house, villagers rushed to the spot and shifted the injured woman to the Community Health Centre at Rajkanika.
Doctors later declared her dead.
Villagers caught accused while trying to flee
Police officials said the accused allegedly attempted to escape from the village after the incident.
However, local residents managed to overpower him and informed the police.
Rajkanika Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Sanjay Kumar Mallick confirmed that the accused had been arrested and booked for murder.
