Mangaluru, October 11, 2025:
A 55-year-old man, Syed Ibrahim Thangal, was arrested in Mangaluru for allegedly posting content on social media in support of the Popular Front of India (PFI), a banned organization in India since 2022. The arrest highlights the authorities’ continued vigilance against the spread of extremist content online.
Details of the Arrest
Thangal, a resident of Beejathali House, Ramakunja village in Kadaba taluk, was apprehended near Urwa Stores in Mangaluru on Thursday. During the arrest, police seized his mobile phone as evidence of the social media posts.
Authorities registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) at Mangaluru North police station, citing Thangal’s alleged promotion of an unlawful organization online.
Judicial Proceedings
Following the arrest, Thangal was produced before the 49th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court and Special Court for NIA cases in Bengaluru. He was remanded to judicial custody until October 24, as the investigation continues. Police officials stated that they are examining the social media posts in detail to determine the extent of the alleged violations.

The Government of India banned PFI in 2022, citing national security concerns and involvement in unlawful activities. Authorities continue to monitor individuals and organizations that attempt to promote the banned group through online platforms.
