Kolkata: The Kolkata Police on April 4, detained a man after it was found that he had preserved his mother’s mortal remains in a refrigerator for the past three years.

Subhabrata Majumdar, a 45-year-old leather technologist had mummified Bina Majumdar’s (his mother’s) body after she passed away back in 2015 and put her in a commercial freezer that was otherwise used to store ice-cream and frozen food.

Majumdar’s father, Gopal has also been taken in for questioning.

The police have stated that Majumdar had preserved his mother’s body in order to keep receiving her pension.

At first, Majumdar told police that he had preserved her body as he was unable to part with her. He is then said to have changed his statement saying that he wanted to keep receiving her pension as he was unemployed.

The police have said that they are still probing the matter as there are many contradictions.

Majumdar is reported to have managed to obtain a living certificate for his mother so that he could continue withdrawing her monthly pension of Rs 50,000 from a bank.

The police are also reported to have found a second freezer, big enough to fit a body. This has caused the cops to question whether Majumdar intended to use the second freezer to store his father’s body after his death.

The grotesque matter came out after neighbours grew suspicious over the high-tonnage air conditioning machine installed in the vacant first floor of Majumdar’s house. The perpetual running of the machine provoked the neighbours to file a complaint with the police.
