A man who collapsed on a road in Outer Delhi died hours later after CCTV footage revealed that a passerby allegedly attempted to steal from him instead of seeking medical help, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 4 am in the Ranhola area, under the jurisdiction of Vikas Nagar police station. According to the police, the man fell unconscious on the roadside and lay unattended for nearly four hours.

CCTV shows alleged theft attempt

Preliminary examination of CCTV footage from nearby cameras suggests that the man may have suffered a medical emergency such as a heart attack or seizure. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination, officials said.

Police said the footage shows two men arriving at the spot on a scooter shortly after the victim collapsed. One of them, who was riding pillion, allegedly got down and picked up the unconscious man’s mobile phone. He later returned to search the victim’s pockets but appeared to find nothing valuable.

Moments later, the suspect seemed to notice a CCTV camera in the area and hurriedly fled the spot along with the scooter rider, police added.

Body found hours later

The man continued to lie unconscious on the road until around 8 am, when local residents noticed him and alerted the police. By the time officers reached the spot, the man was found dead.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been established. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination at a government hospital.

Case registered, hunt on for suspects

Police have registered a case of theft and said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. “We are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and following multiple leads,” a senior police officer said.

The incident has sparked concern over public apathy and the failure to provide timely help during medical emergencies.
