A 30-year-old man from Etawah, Rahul Diwakar, allegedly died by suicide after consuming poison on Wednesday, following public humiliation by his in-laws during a failed attempt to reconcile with his estranged wife.
Rahul, who had worked at a private bank in Gurugram, lost his job after his wife Lakshmi filed a dowry harassment case against him. Hoping to mend ties and see his two-month-old daughter, he visited his wife’s home in Etawah’s Jaswantnagar Bhatora. However, his in-laws ridiculed him during the visit, broadcasting the entire confrontation on Facebook Live, police said.
According to Rahul’s cousin, Ram Mohan, Rahul had supported his wife financially even after she left Gurugram and returned to her parental home. “He had hopes their relationship would improve after the child’s birth, but he was denied access to his daughter and subjected to continuous mistreatment,” said a family member.
Rahul was rushed to the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, where he died during treatment.
Circle Officer Ram Gopal Sharma said that police are awaiting a formal complaint from the family before initiating legal proceedings.
The disturbing case highlights growing concerns around social media misuse, mental health, and the sensitive handling of marital disputes.
