A 37-year-old man has been arrested after his 65-year-old mother died following an alleged assault at Dongargaon village in Mul taluka of Chandrapur district on Thursday night.
The accused, identified as Jagdish Petkule, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Argument reportedly escalated
According to preliminary findings by the Maharashtra Police, an argument broke out between Petkule and his mother, Sumitra, over the preparation of dinner. The dispute allegedly intensified, during which he is said to have assaulted her.
Police sources indicated that Sumitra sustained serious injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Villagers alerted authorities soon after learning of the incident. A team from Mul police station reached the village, secured the area and detained the accused.
Probe underway
Investigators said the accused had a history of alcohol dependence. His wife had reportedly left him two months ago, and he had since been residing with his mother. Police stated that he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. A case has been registered, and a detailed investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events and any additional circumstances surrounding the matter.
Authorities have urged residents to report domestic disputes early to prevent escalation and ensure timely intervention.
