An 18-year-old medical aspirant residing in a girls’ hostel in Patna died on Sunday after remaining in a coma for nearly a week, even as police said allegations of assault and sexual abuse made by her family were not supported by medical or technical evidence.
The student, who had been preparing for medical entrance examinations, was found unconscious in the hostel on January 6 and was immediately shifted to a private hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her death. The incident triggered widespread concern after her family alleged that she had been assaulted and sexually abused.
Police and medical findings
The Bihar Police said a detailed investigation was conducted, including medical examinations and a review of CCTV footage from the hostel premises. Doctors who examined the teenager reported no physical signs of sexual assault.
According to police officials, medical reports indicated that the student had consumed a large quantity of sleeping pills. She was also suffering from typhoid at the time, which may have aggravated her condition. Investigators further stated that her mobile phone search history showed several queries related to suicide, which has become a key focus of the probe.
Post-mortem awaited
Police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received. “All aspects are being examined carefully, and conclusions will be drawn only after the final forensic findings,” an official said, adding that the investigation remains open.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns around student mental health, academic pressure, and safety in hostels, particularly for young aspirants preparing for competitive examinations away from home.
Authorities have urged families and educational institutions to remain vigilant about students’ physical and mental well-being and to seek timely counselling support where needed.
