Two Meerut police personnel have been suspended after CCTV footage showed them relocating an unidentified body to another area at night.
Two police personnel in Meerut — a sub-inspector and a home guard — were suspended after CCTV footage revealed that they allegedly shifted an unidentified body from their jurisdiction and left it outside a shop in another locality late at night. The incident triggered widespread criticism on social media, with users accusing the police of showing “apathy towards common people.”
CCTV footage exposes the act
The footage, which emerged on Friday, showed policemen moving the body under the cover of darkness and leaving it outside a stationery shop in Kazipur under the Lohiyanagar police station limits. The clip quickly went viral, prompting public outrage and calls for accountability.
According to officials, the body had initially been found in the Nauchanadi area within the jurisdiction of the L-Block outpost. Instead of initiating standard procedures — including securing the spot and beginning postmortem formalities — the personnel allegedly attempted to avoid responsibility by relocating the body to another police station’s limits.
Swift action from senior police officials
Responding to the backlash, Meerut SSP Dr Vipin Tada suspended L-Block outpost in-charge Jitendra Kumar and constable Rajesh, while home guard Rohtash was dismissed from service.
“I have also instituted an internal inquiry under SP City Ayush Vikram Singh. The youth is still to be identified,” Tada said, assuring the public that strict action would follow once the investigation concludes.
Shopkeeper discovers the body
The body was discovered by Ronit Bainsla, the owner of the stationery shop outside which it had been placed.
“I saw the body right at the shutter of my stationery shop early morning. Other shopkeepers also assembled in the morning and we informed the police,” Bainsla told TOI.
Curious about the circumstances, local shopkeepers checked CCTV footage from the area. To their shock, the video revealed that policemen had arrived around 1:40 am and left the body outside Bainsla’s shop before driving away.
Inquiry underway; identity still unknown
Police officials have begun examining the timeline, movement of personnel, and possible motive behind the unauthorised relocation. Preliminary reports suggest the personnel may have attempted to avoid the procedural responsibilities that accompany handling an unidentified body, including documentation and coordination with the postmortem department.
The identity of the deceased youth remains unknown, and officials said efforts are underway to trace his family.
The incident has renewed public debate on police accountability, professional ethics, and the treatment of vulnerable individuals in custodial or emergency contexts. Authorities have assured that corrective measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
