Bangladesh’s main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he extended wishes for a speedy recovery to the party’s chairperson and former Bangladesh prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who remains in critical condition at Evercare Hospital.
PM Modi’s message, posted on X, noted his deep concern over the health of the 80-year-old leader, who has been hospitalised since 23 November due to rapidly worsening complications.

PM Modi sends message of support

On X, PM Modi wrote: “Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years.”
He added, “Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. India stands ready to extend all possible support in whatever way we can.”

The message, seen as a gesture of goodwill amid a period of political tension in Bangladesh ahead of national elections, drew a warm response from the BNP.

BNP expresses gratitude to India

In a rare public acknowledgement, the BNP thanked the Indian prime minister through its official X handle.
“BNP deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill and the expression of readiness to extend support,” the party said, noting that the message came at a time when Khaleda Zia’s condition had deteriorated further.

BNP leaders said such international expressions of concern carry significant moral value as the party appeals for broader cooperation for Zia’s treatment.

Former PM remains in critical condition

Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and a pivotal figure in the country’s political landscape, was admitted to Evercare Hospital with a lung infection that later worsened. She was transferred to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) after her condition declined.
Party officials said she has been placed on ventilation support and is being monitored by a team of local and foreign specialists.

Vice-Chairman Ahmed Aazam Khan said doctors have “exhausted most medical options”, adding: “She is in a very critical condition. There is nothing more to do except seek prayers from the whole nation.”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said specialists are working round the clock.
“She is seriously ill. They are trying their best,” he said.
Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed that her condition remained unchanged as of Sunday.

Long-standing health complications

Khaleda Zia has been battling several chronic illnesses for years, including liver and kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis, and eye-related ailments.
She had returned to Dhaka on 6 May after spending nearly four months in London for advanced medical treatment. Her party has repeatedly urged the government to allow her to travel abroad again for further care, a request that has so far been denied.

Conclusion

As Khaleda Zia continues to fight multiple life-threatening complications, PM Modi’s message has added a diplomatic dimension to the situation, drawing rare cross-border political acknowledgment. For now, her medical team remains focused on stabilising her condition, while the BNP has asked supporters across Bangladesh to pray for her recovery.
